CHOK MAA, a new artist residency and exhibition space in Bangkok, run by CHALK HORSE, a contemporary art gallery based in Sydney, Australia. Conceived as a space for both creation and showcasing, the cross-continental project reflects CHALK HORSE’s interest in creating a place for meeting, exchange, and inspiration between Australian and international artists.
The name CHOK MAA has a double meaning, serving as a loose Thai translation of “chalk horse” and as an auspicious phrase meaning“fortune is coming.” These two translations reflect the spirit of the initiative: a space grounded in sharing and the generative possibilities of working across contexts.
Housed within a four-level shophouse, CHOK MAA brings together exhibition and studio environments. Two floors are dedicated to presenting work, while two additional levels provide studio and living spaces for visiting artists, alongside purpose-built facilities and an outdoor area. The residency invites artists to immerse themselves in Bangkok through intensive 3–5 week periods of making, dialogue, and experimentation.
